Wiek

For many years Boukje Schweigman had a fascination for the turning movement. She got the inspiration for WIEK from the never-stopping movement of a mill, the lightbeams of a firetower. This movement gives rest, but in the optical speeding this movement can also be threatening. WIEK is a hypnotising trip for the audience as well as the performer.

In WIEK three female dancers finds themselves sharing a circular area with the horizontally rotating blades of a wind turbine. The seated audience surrounds the space, allowing no possibility to escape; the dancers have no other choice but to confront their situation. Feeble humans are compelled to enter into combat with forces far greater than their own, and the audience is made complicit in the inevitable outcome.
