Zweep

Artistic director Boukje Schweigman drew her inspiration for Zweep from the Far East. In 2009, she travelled to China with Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti to train with both Taoistmonks and Buddhist Shaolin monks. She was greatly inspired by kung fu, and in particular the use of the whip as a weapon. Whip techniques make up only part of the production, however – the whip opened up many more possibilities, aspects and images in the imagination of the artists. In Zweep, the audience is seated hazardously close to the performance space. In this space, a ritual event takes place involving vulnerable bodies and whips. But which is in charge – the body or the whip? And where can strength be found in vulnerability?
