Tilt
2025

Tilt plays with the way our bodies experience gravity.

In our perception, the sun rises and eventually sets. But actually, it’s not the sun that revolves around us. The reality is that we revolve around the sun. Similarly, Tilt sets our bodies in motion relative to the landscape. Schweigman and Bellinkx have each used tilts in perspective in earlier work. They continue their exploration of the theme further especially for Oerol.

In Tilt you surrender your weight to a board that slowly tilts backwards. As you move, the pressure on the soles of your feet spreads across the entire surface of the back body. All the muscle tension you normally use to hold yourself upright gradually becomes redundant. And you begin to feel gravity move through your body in new ways. At the same time, your perspective on the world tilts, offering you a completely new way to experience the landscape on Terschelling. In Tilt, our surroundings move in and out of view – or are we ourselves appearing and disappearing?

Tilt is part of Stimulus: a series of sensory experiences that play with perception. At Oerol festival you will find three installations that throw both the external and the internal senses off balance. As a result, they heighten your senses.

About the makers

The works of Schweigman& are based on research into embodied experience. The company came to earlier editions of Oerol with successful site-specific works Wiek, Blaas, Dreef, Walking, Zweep, Curve and Erf. Johannes Bellinkx designs experiences that question our perceptive frameworks, and at previous Oerol editions presented Framing, Reverse and The Parcel Project. He and Schweigman& found each other in their playful questioning of human perception and together, they created Stimulus; a series of theatrical experiences that do just that.
